Meet propagandist Alexandra Jost!
The influencer "Sasha Meets Russia" sure has an interesting husband ๐
If youโre interested in Russia, or Russiaโs war on Ukraine, you may have come across a recently created social media channel named Sasha Meets Russia, which is full of praise for the Russian Motherland and pouting at mean Russophobes.
The content is as exciting as a plate of soggy pelmeni, BUT there are some tidbits to Sashaโs life that are worth paying attention to, as you will see below.
Here is the channel on Twitter:
And here it is on Telegram, where the author bemoaning the fact that investigative journalists from the likes of iStories and the OCCRP (shout out to my old friend Ilya Lozovsky for this video!) have uncovered her links to Russia Today in a typical, we-poor-Russians-are-always-victims manner:
The woman behind these accounts is young Russian-American Alexandra Jost. The evidence that Jost, or Sasha, as she prefers to be called today, has been paid to create Russian propaganda content was uncovered by Novaya Gazeta Europe when they checked out her tax documents.
You can hit Google translate on all the links above, but here is the relevant portion of the Novaya Gazeta investigation that I can summarize:
As per Russian tax data, in 2023, Jost was on the payroll of Russian company TV Novosti. Russia Today (RT), the propaganda arm of the Russian state, does business as TV Novosti.
As Jost says in the underline portion of the screenshot from her Telegram , โIโve never had to be paid to speak of my love for Russia.โ Babygirl is lying, but thatโs to be expected.
According to iStories, Jost was officially being paid about 160k Russian rubles per month as of 2023. Thatโs around $2k a month. Knowing how Russian state media works, I can pretty much guarantee that she was being paid more (not zillions or anything, mind you, people like Jost are bought cheaply).
Usually itโs via something called โnadbavkiโ, which in legal terms is akin to a bonus, and in practical terms, are meant to hide the actual salary of a Russian state media employee.
I became curious what Jost is up to right now, so I got on VPN and went looking through Russiaโs tax database.
Jost is registered as an โindividual entrepreneurโ in Russia as of 2024, which is what freelancers must do to stay compliant with the tax authorities. Her main line of work is listed as โmarket research and public opinion research.โ Other tidbits I wanted to note for American readers is โproviding services for posting information.โ This is VERY standard for a freelancer who is paid to write certain posts on social media, just so youโre aware.
None of this is shocking news. In fact, I wouldโve been shocked if Jostโs curated pro-Russian content wasnโt being paid for.
I did, however, become curious as to why this young Russian-American woman ended up where she was.
Because Jost is said to have been born in Hong-Kong, digging up public records on her has been a headache.
But hereโs her old LinkedIn:
CAD, which is in Brussels, is cheaper than most American colleges before you factor in financial aid. The full LinkedIn page also has her attending Emmanuel College in Boston for all but a year, though that could have been an online program.
I also noticed internships specific to Russia AND the fact that Jost worked for Fosterโs Daily Democrat in Dover, New Hampshire:
I used Jostโs patronymic to find information on her dad, who is fair bit older than her Russian mother, and has a significant footprint in New Hampshire. I donโt like to put the spotlight on peopleโs relatives - which is why Iโll only tell you that from the outside, this is a typical American family. They DID sell their rather nice, big house not long ago (Iโm sure Jost felt very oppressed by โrussophobiaโ when living there), which makes me wonder if cutting ties with big bad America was a family affair.
If property data is to be believed, there shouldโve been a decent amount of equity in that house + the fatherโs social security payments are likely to ensure at least a comfortable existence in Russia. As long as their dear daughter says exactly what the Russian government needs her to say ๐
Jostโs local tax office in Moscow places her in the Tushino district of Moscow, which is hardly glamorous, but again, it can be comfortable.
Jostโs Russian grandparents meanwhile live in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Siberia, and while their house doesnโt look like some hovel if you go by Russian standards, you can tell this family isnโt wealthy:
Also, hereโs a screenshot from the Instagram of Sashaโs husband, Domingo Garcia, whoโs a Mexican entrepreneur living in Russia and is keen to expand business cooperation between Russia and Mexico:
โBusiness cooperationโ means a lot of things if youโre working with Russians, so letโs put a pin in it.
Hereโs a LinkedIn screenshot:
Also, according to the same LinkedIn, Domingo has had a fairly successful career and recently got a new job in Spain! Gosh, thatโs interesting, considering all of the Russian operations in Spain we keep hearing about ๐
I HATE how I canโt use Archive to preserve the whole page, but hereโs a live link for now.
Hereโs an interesting section on his education:
Universidad Panamericana is a private Catholic school in Mexico City. The costs are substantial, especially for Mexico.
Iโm a private school kid myself. I donโt make assumptions about peopleโs financial backgrounds easily, but I am guessing that our dear Sasha simply found a comfortable existence in Russia with her Mexican businessman husband (who should really be scrutinized by U.S. authorities should he ever come here, because, once again, โbusiness cooperationโ means many different things to Russians) and her propaganda job.
Whatโs also notable to me about the Sasha Meets Russia gimmick is that itโs meant to be wholesome as opposed to glamorous. Sasha loves the simple Russian life, which she never shuts up about.
Iโm not going to post her content here, seeing as itโs brainwashing paid for by some of the worst people on this planet, but itโs all kokoshniks and Siberia and banya and โoh my gosh, we have real Coca-Cola! Sanctions donโt scare us!โ (Russians bragging about having food will never stop being amusing to me)
This isnโt the โsexyโ version of Russia, but it is, like Jost herself states, one steeped in โpositivityโ tropes. One that a girl living in aforementioned Tushino might create. A sharp contrast to, say, the glitzy world of Jackson Hinkleโs former government-appointed girlfriend, a Russian beauty queen and model.
These propagandists produce content for all types of people. Thereโs models in Balenciaga for those interested in that. And thereโs girls like Jost, who like supermarkets and berries and are a bit miffed at โLGBT propagandaโ but in an innocent, cute way! Thereโs so-called โwar correspondentsโ and โhuman rights activists too.โ
Itโs a multi-pronged effort to target you with a simple message: Russia good.
And it also provides girls like Jost with a chance to be โspecial.โ
As workers in torture basements in occupied Ukraine and elsewhere mop the blood off the floors as they wait for new arrivals to hell, these girls get to be the lipstick on a fat and ravenous pig.
Why would the pig need to do all that? Because it has plans for other people, not just Ukrainians.
Naive rubes might eat all of that up but here, at the Glorious Normie Restoration, we will always strive to be better.
On a personal note: I have to get major surgery next week, so if you like my work, please get a paid subscription! I hate being sick, and might be laid up for a while. It sucks! I am so grateful to all of you for reading and subscribing.
I have enjoyed (ever since you guest-posted on The Bulwark) your combination of "new media" Russian propoganda takedowns, with an "old school" blogging style.
Prayers and assorted good Karma to you and your family this summer, and may your recovery be full, fast, and morphine dream-heavy!
